The Ohio School Boards Association (“OSBA”) Capital Conference is going virtual this year, and three Pepple & Waggoner attorneys have been asked to participate. The Conference runs November 7 – 10, 2020, and will feature online learning sessions focusing on public education in the State of Ohio. A preview of the topics to be covered by Pepple & Waggoner’s attorneys are highlighted below:
Brian DeSantis & Donna Andrew – “EdChoice 2.0”
- After nearly a year of debate and several legislative amendments, the “new” EdChoice is here. Brian and Donna will be joined by Akron Public School District C.F.O Ryan Pendleton and Perrysburg Exempted Village School District Superintendent Thomas Hosler to explain EdChoice 2.0. Understand EdChoice’s history & recent changes, while (re)learning how EdChoice may impact your District’s funding, budget, enrollment, facilities, & long-term planning.
Donna Andrew – “Informed and Effective Employee Discipline”
- Donna will be joined by Midview Local School District Superintendent Bruce Willingham to discuss how employee discipline can be very costly for a district if an administrator is not prepared or knowledgeable on documenting the specific issue and cause for discipline. Donna and Bruce will review a process that districts can adopt to help them prepare for and deal with disciplinary situations.
Jacqueline Brickman – “Practical Advice for Avoiding IEP Issues”
- Jacqueline will be joined by Cloverleaf Local School District Director of Special Services Nicole Stalter to discuss common missteps that may lead to special education disputes. Jacqueline will provide practical advice on addressing student behaviors, knowing when it is time to reconvene the IEP team and ensuring meaningful parental participation throughout the process.
